Artist statement: A Symphony of Seeing brings together a multifaceted and colorful collection of drawings, paintings, encaustic and monotypes that explore the rich dualities of nature, travel, and emotion. The work orchestrates a visual harmony between deeply textured, surreal landscapes, minimalist black-and-white drawings, encaustic paintings and collage. Ultimately, this exhibition invites viewers to experience the world’s diverse tempos—shifting seamlessly from quiet, soothing abstractions to bold, provocative expressions.
Artist Bio: Esther Kirshenbaum is a full time artist with B.S. from the University of Michigan. Connecting science to art was an easy decision. Awestruck by the Great Barrier Reef during her years teaching high school biology in Australia, she discovered that the passion she felt for nature was best expressed by creating images. The proximity to countries with strong cottage industries allowed her to study various techniques such as the encaustic medium in a village in Java, Indonesia. Back in the USA she did metal work mentored by blacksmith, printmaking in workshops, and drawing lessons from her mother, a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute. Mid-career she resided in NYC where she maintained a studio and exhibited at venues including Brooklyn Museum’s Go Brooklyn Artist, The Ground Floor Gallery, The 18th Street Studios and the Candy Factory. She was also commissioned to do a sculptural metal trellis for the Obama White House. Upon her return from NYC, she has continued working as an artist in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has exhibited locally and nationally, including the Taubman/Forbes Art
Science Project at MOCAD, solo shows at Kerrytown Concert House, group shows at Gutman Gallery, 22 N. Huron Gallery, DAM and is in collections at Mayo Clinic, Beaumont Hospital, U. of M. among others. She was also awarded a residency from Some Serious Business in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
