Artist Biography:
Claudia Burns is a retired art teacher turned painter and mosaic artist, devoted to capturing beauty through detailed and expressive works. For many years, she taught art in schools, nurturing creativity in others. In 2013, she retired from teaching, ready to begin a new artistic chapter. Soon after, Burns faced the heartbreaking loss of my husband. In the midst of grief, she found solace in art—it became both a healing process and a means of personal expression.
Just before the pandemic, Burns met a mentor who rekindled her passion for traditional oil painting. During the lockdown, she dedicated herself to refining her craft through virtual lessons, deepening her skills and artistic voice. Today, she creates detailed paintings of Michigan’s lakes and cityscapes, scenes from Italy and other travel destinations, and sacred subjects. Sometimes Burns paints outdoors, en plein air; other times, she works in the studio. Through her art, she hopes to share beauty, evoke memories, and foster connection. Beauty invites contemplation—it awakens the intellect, stirs memory, and touches the emotions tied to past experiences. This exhibit features a collection of oil paintings and sketches in pencil and watercolor, inspired by places she has visited in Italy—from Venice and Camogli in the north to Florence, Tuscany, and Rome further south.
