ARTIST RECEPTION
Drawing As High Art
David Hile
Tuesday, June 13th, 2023 5:30 – 7:30PM
David Hile grew up in Monroe, MI and is an alumnus of Monroe County Community College. Transferring to Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI he received 3 art scholarships and graduated with a BFA degree, Cum Laude. After pursuing an MFA degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI majoring in drawing and painting Dave began his career in 1981. For the next 34 years he worked as a freelance commercial illustrator, while establishing Hile Creative, a leading brand development firm in Ann Arbor, MI.
Retiring in 2015 Dave built a home studio and became a fine artist. In 2016 he accepted an adjunct teaching professorship in Art at Monroe County Community College, and continued teaching for nearly 3 1/2 years until December, 2019.
Artist Statement: I’ve taken a stripped-down approach to my current work. Using only graphite, white charcoal, and pastel I’ve developed a mostly linear style with areas of flat color. I aim to create fully realized works that are universally appealing highlighting the dignity of humanity and a unity with nature. I view my drawings not as initial sketches, but as fully-realized artistic statements equal to a painting or sculpture.
I’m inspired by the late 19th and early 20th century Masters Casorati, Modigliani, Picasso, and Schjerfbeck as well as Japanese woodblock prints.
Reception is free and open to the public
