Jauron Perry Quintet – Tribute to Detroit: The Music of Detroit Composers

Detroit-born trumpeter Jauron Perry is one of the city’s most closely watched young jazz voices. A 2024 Detroit Jazz Festival National Combo Competition winner and Michigan Jazz Festival Rising Horn Competition winner, Perry came up through the Detroit School of Arts and is completing his Jazz Studies degree at Michigan State University under bassist Rodney Whitaker. His playing carries the fingerprints of his mentors — among them Wendell Harrison, Marcus Printup, Tim Warfield, Vincent Chandler, and Kris Johnson — and a lineage of Detroit horn players stretching back generations.
For this performance, Perry leads a quintet through a program built around that lineage: music by Detroit drummer-composer Lawrence Williams (including selections from his numbered ballet suites), trumpet giant Donald Byrd, and Marcus Belgrave — the trumpeter and educator whose decades of mentorship helped shape Detroit’s modern jazz scene, Perry included. Alongside these tributes, Perry and his bandmates will premiere original compositions, extending the same tradition of teaching and passing down that raised them.
It’s a set built on memory and inheritance — a young musician honoring the mentors and forebears, some now gone, who made Detroit jazz what it is, while pushing the music forward in his own voice.
