CONCERT DESCRIPTION:
Kerrytown Concert House is delighted to welcome concert pianist Michael Finlay for his debut performance at the House as part of our new Siciliano Salon Concerts Series this year. Finlay has put together a beautiful program that celebrates the compositional creative process of music through sketches and “notebooks” of brilliant and timeless composers – Scarlatti, Schubert, Beethoven and Prokofiev. Join us at the House for what is sure to be an enthusiastic and inspiring performance, by this expressive pianist on our treasured Hamburg Steinway!
From Michael Finlay about his program: “Prokofiev’s subtitle for the final piece on this recital, “From Old Notebooks,” captures the spirit of the entire program. Each piece conjures images of rough ideas and fleeting ideas jotted down in an old notebook. The three Scarlatti sonatas that begin the program are like musical sketches: tantalizingly short, fleeting vignettes that are over almost as soon as they begin. Schubert’s Four Impromptus Op. 90, while more substantial in length, echo this same theme of transience, embodying the spirit of a wandering traveler, sojourning from place to place without a clear destination. Beethoven famously worked from sketchbooks, endlessly working to refine his ideas until he arrived at the final result. This rigorous process is reflected in the intricate and profound Sonata Op. 10 No. 3. Finally, Prokofiev’s 4th Sonata, “From Old Notebooks,” epitomizes this recital’s theme. A musical montage constructed from fragments and sketches found in old notebooks, the piece is a tribute to the forgotten gems of inspiration. Much like the scattered thoughts and ideas that a writer collects over time, the sonata fuses disparate musical elements into a cohesive and engaging narrative.”
