Harry Sargous: A Celebration of Artistry (1948-2025)
Former students of Professor Harry Sargous will perform in honor of this prestigious artist and pedagogue who passed away in May of 2025. Sargous was former Principal Oboist of the Toronto Symphony (1971-1982), and joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1982. Harry was an internationally acclaimed musician whose career spanned continents and decades.

A Tale of Two Quintets with Kathryn Goodson and Friends
Across nearly a century, two quintets emerge from the same rare design — piano and four strings, but with the low murmur of the double bass replacing the 2nd violin. Schubert's "Trout Quintet" is from 1819 and includes the famous variations on his own wildly successful song, "Die Forelle." In 1903, Ralph Vaughan Williams took up the same instrumentation to compose a lavish, Brahmsian work, which he then hid away. In the 1990s, his widow lifted the embargo, and it was released for publication. Pianist Kathryn Goodson and friends bring the two quintets into the same light — one a beloved classic, the other a passionate outsider. The Chicago Jazz Band - Doctor Jazz: The Music of Jelly Roll Morton
The Chicago Jazz Band was the creation of jazz pianist James Dapogny (1940-2019). For over 40 years the band toured widely, bringing vibrant, powerful and sophisticated classic jazz to countless listeners. Though the band played hardboiled Chicago-style jazz, a certain Southern city also provided much of their repertoire. When it came to New Orleans jazz, Jelly Roll Morton was the originator, master, and its most outstanding composer and soloist - he’d tell you so!
The Chisholm Jazz Legacy Series at Kerrytown Concert House presents The Jeff Hamilton Trio
Kerrytown Concert House proudly launches The Chisholm Jazz Legacy Series, a new annual concert series established through an endowment gift from Betty Chisholm in memory of her late husband, Don Chisholm. The inaugural performance features a special appearance by the Jeff Hamilton Trio, led by one of jazz's most celebrated drummers. With a career spanning over five decades, Jeff Hamilton has performed and/or recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Diana Krall, Rosemary Clooney, and Natalie Cole, among many others, and has appeared on more than 300 recordings.

CANCELED BY ARTIST - Stephen Rush presents a Jazz Oratorio: Middle Passage
This event has been canceled by the artist. We apologize for any inconvenience. Composer/conductor Stephen Rush brings together a jazz septet, with vocalists Ryan Buyers and Kevin Starnes, for a large-scale jazz oratorio built on the poetry of Robert Hayden. "Middle Passage" reimagines the 1839 Amistad rebellion, led by Cinquez, through music that moves between West African chant, Cuban rhythm, and free jazz, with the band itself functioning as a chorus, singing and calling out alongside the narration. Hayden, the first tenured Black English professor at the University of Michigan, wrote the poem that anchors the piece.
Ellen Rowe’s All About the Trio - The Trio Goes to the Movies
Ellen Rowe opens the 26-27 season of All About the Trio with a tribute to one of jazz’s richest source books: Hollywood. While many beloved “standards” came from Broadway or Tin Pan Alley, film composers were also writing wonderful melodies that jazz musicians adapted for their own use. This concert traces how those themes crossed over from the screen to the bandstand.

Ellen Rowe’s All About the Trio - All of You: The Evolution of a Jazz Standard
What happens to a song after it leaves Broadway and enters the jazz repertoire? This season's 3rd installment of Ellen Rowe's All About the Trio answers that question one recording at a time. The Trio, joined by a rotating cast of special guests, traces the life of a single tune — Cole Porter's "All of You," introduced in the 1955 musical Silk Stockings — through six landmark jazz interpretations, from Sarah Vaughan's vocal reading to Miles Davis's, Ahmad Jamal's, the Modern Jazz Quartet's, Bill Evans's, and Keith Jarrett's takes on the tune. Each version reharmonizes, reshapes, and reinvents the same 32 bars, offering a rare look at how a jazz standard evolves — and how much room a great song leaves for reinvention.

Ellen Rowe’s All About the Trio - We Get Requests: The Oscar Peterson Trio's Enduring Masterpiece
In October and November of 1964, the Oscar Peterson Trio walked into a New York studio with Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums, and cut what would become one of the most beloved piano trio albums in jazz history: We Get Requests. Six decades later, it's still the record many trios measure themselves against — a masterclass in swing, trio interplay, and wonderful arrangements that also incorporate the era's bossa nova influence.

Samhain with Selkie
Through song and story, Selkie conjures a mischievous Samhain evening (pronounced SOW-in) - blending haunting melodies, twisted tales, and just enough dark humor to keep the spirits entertained. Formed in 2019 by veteran West Michigan Celtic musicians Jim Spalink, Michele Venegas, and Cara Lieurance, and joined more recently by Noah Jacobs, Selkie draws on the Irish folk tradition to weave close-harmony songs sung in English, Gaelic, and French with mood-lifting traditional dance sets. As Samhain marks the Celtic new year and the thinning of the veil between worlds, join Selkie for an evening where the old stories come out to play.

Just as Ann Arbor's famous Art Fair spans a gloriously large variety of visual art genres, the Ann Arbor Festival of Song (now in its 32nd year!) spans an equally large variety of musical genres. Favorite area singers from Michigan and Ohio take the stage Friday evening for a program of cabaret and musical theatre hits that celebrates the American experience with honesty, humor, and heart, at once a jubilee and a blues, a salute and a sigh.
