When it came to New Orleans jazz, Jelly Roll Morton was the originator, master, and its most outstanding composer and soloist - he’d tell you so!

The inaugural performance features a special appearance by the Jeff Hamilton Trio, led by one of jazz's most celebrated drummers. With a career spanning over five decades, Jeff Hamilton has performed and/or recorded with Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Diana Krall, Rosemary Clooney, and Natalie Cole, among many others, and has appeared on more than 300 recordings.

A Tale of Two Quintets with Kathryn Goodson and Friends
FeaturedAcross nearly a century, two quintets emerge from the same rare design — piano and four strings, but with the low murmur of the double bass replacing the 2nd violin. Schubert's "Trout Quintet" is from 1819 and includes the famous variations on his own wildly successful song, "Die Forelle." In 1903, Ralph Vaughan Williams took up the same instrumentation to compose a lavish, Brahmsian work, which he then hid away. In the 1990s, his widow lifted the embargo, and it was released for publication. Pianist Kathryn Goodson and friends bring the two quintets into the same light — one a beloved classic, the other a passionate outsider.

Composer/conductor Stephen Rush brings together a jazz septet, with vocalists Ryan Buyers and Kevin Starnes, for a large-scale jazz oratorio built on the poetry of Robert Hayden. "Middle Passage" reimagines the 1839 Amistad rebellion, led by Cinquez, through music that moves between West African chant, Cuban rhythm, and free jazz, with the band itself functioning as a chorus, singing and calling out alongside the narration. Hayden, the first tenured Black English professor at the University of Michigan, wrote the poem that anchors the piece.

Each version reharmonizes, reshapes, and reinvents the same 32 bars, offering a rare look at how a jazz standard evolves — and how much room a great song leaves for reinvention.
