We apologize for any inconvenience. Composer/conductor Stephen Rush brings together a jazz septet, with vocalists Ryan Buyers and Kevin Starnes, for a large-scale jazz oratorio built on the poetry of Robert Hayden. "Middle Passage" reimagines the 1839 Amistad rebellion, led by Cinquez, through music that moves between West African chant, Cuban rhythm, and free jazz, with the band itself functioning as a chorus, singing and calling out alongside the narration. Hayden, the first tenured Black English professor at the University of Michigan, wrote the poem that anchors the piece. ![]() Featured - ![]() Featured Her Only Light celebrates the release of a new album out on Sono Luminus records featuring the classical and folk songs of Elizabeth “Connie” Converse. Chicago artists Emmy Bean (vocalist) and Ronnie Kuller (pianist/arranger) invite the audience to join in their awe and appreciation of Converse's brilliance by performing duet and solo versions of songs from throughout her writing career, some of them adventurous, some of them deceptively simple. | 1 event,![]() Featured - ![]() Featured Fiddler Carson McHaney, cellist Karl Henry, guitarist G Rockwell, and bassist Noah Harrington have varied musical backgrounds and experience playing in a variety of musical styles. 1 event,![]() Featured ![]() Featured Ellen Rowe opens the 26-27 season of All About the Trio with a tribute to one of jazz’s richest source books: Hollywood. While many beloved “standards” came from Broadway or Tin Pan Alley, film composers were also writing wonderful melodies that jazz musicians adapted for their own use. This concert traces how those themes crossed over from the screen to the bandstand. | 0 events, | 0 events, | 0 events, | 1 event,![]() Featured - ![]() Featured Ari Axelrod returns to Kerrytown Concert House and his hometown of Ann Arbor with the KCH debut of A Place For Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway, the first of two shows in his residency at the House. | 1 event,![]() Featured - ![]() Featured Ars Carpatica presents two remarkable chamber works by composers who helped shape the musical landscape of Eastern Europe, and who, by striking coincidence, both chose G minor. Enescu's youthful Piano Trio reveals the expressive depth and originality that would define his career. Zarębski's Piano Quintet, Op. 34, stands as one of Romantic chamber music's great yet underappreciated masterpieces, written just months before his death at 31. Together, these works offer an evening of soaring lyricism, virtuosic brilliance, and richly woven musical conversation for piano and strings. | 0 events, |
