Born Beaver, Pennsylvania, self-taught musician RAY HEITGER grew up with good music around the house and became interested in jazz through a high school friend who played trumpet in a dixieland band. Upon moving to Toledo for graduate school, he played at Brother Baker’s just outside of Toledo, before forming the Dixieland 5 1/2. Heitger organized the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band in 1967, which played at Tony Packo’s Cafe from 1968-2002. Heitger’s Spittune Records has produced seven albums of the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band and a trio album with clarinet, piano, and tuba.
