Artist statement for Rita Malone:

Rita’s paintings depict gestural abstract expressionism. She rarely creates from concept. Creativity is not always a means to an end, especially when working in the abstract. Often, the actual process itself dictates where the piece will go and ultimately end up.

Rita spent many years working as a photographer, capturing images of the world as it is. It was through private study with a painter in Vermont that led her to her voice in abstract expressionism and collage.

Upon reflection, all art is inspired by something that already exists, whether it be a momentous life event, pages from a book, objects found in nature or man-made. The possibilities are in fact endless.

Rita’s work has been described as “lyrical, full of motion…” which is an interesting commentary given that she constantly moves while creating a piece. She responds to the fluidity of the ink or the paint as it moves around the canvas. It’s a non-rehearsed dance…

Artist statement for Chris Nordin:

Chris Nordin is a master glass, artist, blacksmith, and fabricator who has designed sculptures for Marriott International, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Mott Children’s Hospital, among many other commissions. He believes that art can be transformational.

“History, tradition, and technique are the main influences of every piece of work that I do. These three sources are highly integrated together with Italian glass culture. Not limiting myself to traditional materials, my work continually draws me towards alternative mixed media.”
