Artist Bio: Born in Mexico City in a bi-cultural family, Andrea Lozano’s artistic life has been enriched by contrasting cultures and places. After earning a BFA from Olivet College, Andrea has explored the visual arts in MI and NM —as an exhibiting artist, portraitist, teacher, graphic designer and book illustrator. She continues to record her impressions as a painter and urban sketcher.

Artist statement: Living in New Mexico between 2010-20*, I was captivated by its expansive landscapes, rustic architecture and diverse peoples. At an altitude of 7000 ft., Santa Fe is bathed in a quality of light that produces the bright colors and contrasts in my a la prima paintings and plein air pastels. The traditional adobe architecture, with its rounded feminine forms paired against the bluest of skies, made me feel unexplainably at peace —while the colonial churches reminded me of my childhood in Mexico. The weathered quality of objects, with their rich patinas and textures, challenged me to replicate them in paint and pastels. As a portraitist, I enjoyed representing the diverse population living under New Mexico’s Zia Pueblo sun —a symbol of universal harmony and unity. Whether you have experienced NM, or have yet to visit, I hope my record of a place & time takes you on an enjoyable journey to this unique State. (*As my NM exhibit was cancelled due to the pandemic, I appreciate this opportunity to share this work —some of it for the first time.)
